‘Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex—For the Courageous, the Curious, and the Cowards’ (2001) was Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba’s first video work, and forms part of his beautiful film series, Memorial Project Vietnam. All three films were shot entirely underwater off the coast of Vietnam in the Indochina Sea, and explored Vietnamese history and identity. In this particular “Memorial” work, six fisherman race across the ocean floor, pulling cyclos (rickshaws) and occasionally going up to the surface for air, and in ‘Happy New Year - Memorial Project for Vietnam II’ (2003), a New Year’s dragon is carried by divers in the water, with small balls randomly shooting upwards and exploding coloured powder, referencing the 1968 Tet Offensive which occurred on the eve of the lunar New Year.
